Many skin conditions, such as acne and oily skin, can be helped immensely by proper skin care. Taking proper care of your skin is the first step to living a life with radiant skin. Often, when you take care of the outside, your mind and heart are also affected, because you are more confident and self-assured.

First, if you have a skin disease, talk to your doctor about the best skin care regimen for the problem you are dealing with. This skin care is going to have specific steps for you to take that target the problem of your specific disease. The goal is to completely stop the disease and often requires prescription medication.

However, there are many steps you can take to eliminate problems on your own through prevention. If you have the proper skin care routine already in place, it might help to keep any problems from popping up. However, even the best skin care regimen will not prevent all skin diseases and having a disease on your skin does not mean you are dirty or have taken poor care of your skin, no matter what your grandmother told you!

The most common complaint about skin is acne. Most people think that acne is caused by poor cleanliness. This is not true. Acne is often genetic and caused by the oiliness of the skin that is natural. Hormones can also cause breakouts of acne. And, acne does not always occur on the face. It can occur on any area of the skin.

There are many things you can do to help control your acne, keeping it from becoming bad enough to create scarring and other problems. First, if the acne is on an area of your body besides your face, you should avoid wearing clothes that fit tightly to the skin. If your sweat stays on your body, it can aggravate acne. Allow your skin room to breath.

Another important aspect of skin care for acne is to avoid touching the nodules with your hands. If the acne is from an infection, your hands can spread the infection. Finally, do not squeeze your pimples. This causes scars and can also help acne to spread.

Another common skin problem is dry skin, particularly in the winter. The winter is savage on your skin, because the air inside and outside is dry. Proper skin care for dry skin includes plenty of moisturizers! Place hydrating lotion on every area of your body, particularly after taking a shower, because your skin is ready to absorb the moisture at this time.

Another common skin complaint is brown spots. These occur on areas of your body that are exposed for long periods of time to the UV rays from the sun and appear as darkened spots on the skin. This is particularly noticeable on the hands and arms, particularly in women. The best preventative skin care for brown spots is always wearing sunscreen when outdoors, no matter if it is warm and sunny or not. Many forget to wear sunscreen in the winter, but if skin is exposed, you still need it, because the sun is still out! You can also avoid the damage from the sun through wearing clothes that cover your skin.

By: Michael Russell

Variation in seasons makes it necessary that we alter our skin treatment and use of creams and lotions should be changed to match weather. Therefore, we should first know any harm that carelessness could cause if skin care is neglected.

Just the way during winter out we have to fight against dryness, similarly in summer too, our skin will require moisturizing, though not like the winter but in a different way. You can moisturize your skin not just externally, moisturizing can also be done through bringing out changes in diet.

Winter time diet consists of lot of fat because body requires the fat to fight winter, on the other hand during summer; diet should be very less fat, lot of water and fiber. In fact reduction in amount of meat consumption would bring a lot of coolness to your body. You also need cutting down on hard drinks, instead you can switch to something natural and cooling, and correctly fruits for the season like the watermelon, oranges, etc.

During lunch and dinner, if you wish to keep your body cool, you can try out salads and yogurt, which will provide your body with much needed coolness and also help it withstand the summer heat.

Your skin will very much show what’s on your diet. The more you consume fresh fruits and salads, the cleaner and radiant skin will become. Consumption of water too should be more than you were consuming during the winter, ideally it is around 8 glasses of 200ml each day. So keep a count of how much you consume each day.

Bathing is very necessary at least twice each day during summer, your skin with benefit from the coolness of water soothing the sweat glands, you will also be able to wash the grime off during summer. Make sure you do not take a bath immediately after you came indoors from being under sun for long. Your skin will benefit if you wait for sometime before entering the shower, taking a bath immediately after coming from direct sun tends to dry skin, rather than do it any good, a 10 minute wait would be beneficial.

Since you are taking a bath more than once during the day, it is necessary that you use a soft but effective soap, which is enhanced with moisturizers and skin nourishing elements. Natural skin care demands that you do not use anything that is purely chemical, today research and development has made it possible that you use products with natural ingredients that benefit your skin.

Skin care is essential during all seasons, however you need changing products with season, the cold cream you were using for your skin during winter to avoid drying up of skin would no longer be effective during summer.

By: Ujwala Bapat

Winter is here and the frost is not only nipping at your nose but the whole face. Fortunately, with a facial skin care routine that meets your exact skin care needs you can be on your way to healthy, radiant skin tone.

Facial skin care is more than just cleansing and dabbing on the occasional cream at night. You need to be more responsible in how you protect your skin on a daily basis. Drinking more fluids and using products that have moisture-retaining ingredients like Phytessence Wakame are excellent methods you can follow. Skin care products that have special ingredients like wakame will add moisture as well as sooth your skin while the winter conditions are irritating and drying it out.

simple winter skin care tips:

Use a mild cleanser as opposed to soap, which can strip your skin of the essential oils it needs.

Though you may not be as thirsty as during the summer, continue to drink lots of water to provide the necessary hydration to your skin.

Avoid products with high alcohol content, heavy perfumes or other additives that can irritate your sensitive, dry skin.

Wear rubber gloves whenever you are dealing with cleansing products, including dish soap.

Dry your hands completely after washing them to avoid chapping, and apply hand lotion after each cleansing.

Sunscreens are a good idea, even during the winter months, as the winter sun can damage any exposed areas of your body.

You should moisturize your face and body with a thick moisturizing cream or lotion during the day whenever you feel that you skin is becoming dry, and also after you have showered. You should also use an oil based supplement such as cod-liver oil or flaxseed oil to moisturize your body from within. You should drink at least eight glasses of water per day as it helps keep the skin from dehydrating and it is also beneficial to your health overall.

From time immemorial the concept of beauty is associated with the physical appearance of a person. The term generally conjures up images of a beautiful face with flawless complexion and good physique. Skin care treatments date back thousands of years. Ancient Greeks where known to indulge in the care of mind, body and soul, with the body taking preference. We are fascinated to hear about beauty baths, natural skin care and other details of those times. To maintain the god-given beauty, we have to take care of our skin. What better way than to follow the natural methods and ingredients found in nature to achieve the most sought after aspect of human existence?

During early civilization skin care transcended gender. Both men and women took care through various methods of natural skin treatment. The trend is fast approaching where people of both gender want to look good. Skin care treatment not only helps in maintaining the looks of a person but also produces a sense of well being and helps in rejuvenation of the mind. The fresher we look the more confident and replenished are we.

Skin care through natural methods is therapeutic.

A holistic approach to skin care can be achieved through Ayurveda. As the meaning of this ancient treatment lies in the `knowledge of life’ where health is a result of harmony, and illness is that of disharmony with nature, one has to strive to maintain a healthy balance between them. Known to have practiced more than 5000 years ago in India, it paves a path to acknowledge the dire need for it.

The practice of ayurveda has been passed on from generations. We can still hear our grandmother admonishing us to use natural methods to clean our face other than the chemical cakes, which we use in the name of soaps. Oil massage is still a favorite with most of us, as this makes us face the daunting tasks in this materialistic world of today. It serves as a natural `soothener’ and makes our skin radiant. Skin care is still a part and parcel of one’s life. Improper or negligent skin care results in premature ageing of the skin and turns it excessively dry and wrinkled. Proper diet helps in maintaining good health. With good health comes proper skin nourishment. Regular intake of honey and milk products helps in nourishing the skin.

As more and more people are turning towards fast foods, the idea of healthy food is fast diminishing. The culture with which we were bred has taken a back-stage with people vying to survive in this mechanical world. With alarming rise in global warming added efforts have to be taken to ensure a trouble-free life. Such drastic changes have an unending effect on our skin too. Many naturalists, however, have taken upon the daunting task to revive our ancient culture and tradition, which includes our health. As beauty is not only skin deep but also is produced from proper care of body, mind and soul, the need of the hour is to once again embrace the nuances of ayurveda.

The input is directly proportional to output. What we take in reveals its magic by allowing it to be witnessed on the exterior. In other words, a healthy lifestyle of exercise, diet and ayurveda proves to be priceless in the long run. So, it is high time we pack up all our synthetic products and turn towards the time-tested methods of gaining radiance back into our lives…whether it is internal or external. Beauty is not merely skinning deep but allows itself to manifest in the well being of one’s relationship with nature.

For some, a face care routine has been a natural part their adult lives. But for many, it is yet another thing that they are supposed to do but just don’t have time for. Something they think is a good idea in theory, but in practice it’s not so easy.

Well, guess what? It doesn’t have to be a production. As a matter of fact, it takes about the same amount of time as it does to brush your teeth. And the fact is, it really IS a good idea to do on a daily basis.

Think of a good cleansing and care routine as the foundation for your anti-aging regimen. Why? Because it removes make-up, dirt and pollution that your skin has “acquired” throughout the day. All of these things weigh down your skin and clog pores, which can add to sagging and increase the chance of wrinkles and fine lines. This routine, combined with healthy eating, exercise, and avoidance of sun can help you keep wrinkles at bay and keep you looking your best.

Additionally, the use of natural skin care products ensures that your skin is not aborbing toxins and harmful chemicals that not only can damage skin over time, but can absorb into your bloodstream. Why risk causing long term damage? Stick with natural skin care products and your skin will be fabulous on the outside and the inside.

To achieve radiant skin, we recommend that you follow these basic steps each morning and evening: Cleanse, Tone and Moisturize. One evening or morning per week, we recommend that you add a fourth step as well: Exfoliate.

Step 1: Cleanse. Choose a cleanser that is gentle but effective enough to do the job without drying or leaving a film. The cleanser should be free of harsh detergents like sulfates and free of chemical fragrances which can irritate skin.

To cleanse properly – dampen skin with warm, not hot, water. Squeeze a small amount of cleanser into the palm of your hand, then rub gently into skin on face and neck. Rubbing in circles, then pushing outward toward the edge of your face is the most effective. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Step 2: Exfoliate. Once per week, it is beneficial to remove the surface debris from your skin. Sloughing off the dead skin cells helps to reveal fresh, smooth, rejuvenated skin. Exfoliation should be done carefully and not more than once or twice per week to avoid over-exfoliation and potential tearing of the skin.

A gentle exfoliating scrub is recommended. A microdermabrasion scrub is an excellent choice as it has microcrystals that gently but very effectively smooth and renew skin.

Exfoliators should be applied to damp skin after cleansing, but before toning. A small amount should be used on slightly damp skin to avoid irritation. Working in small patches, rub the exfoliator with your fingertips in a circular motion, taking care to avoid eyes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Step 3: Tone. After cleansing (and exfoliating, if appropriate) applying a toner is the next step. Toner is an often-skipped or ignored step, but it is one that is highly important. A good toner that is free of alcohol and is non-drying and natural can help to remove the last traces of make-up and cleanser, as well as balance your skin’s pH to ensure that your face is going to be ready for the moisturizer.

Toner can be applied by dampening a cotton ball with the toner and stroking it across your face. Alternatively, toner can be spritzed onto your face and either left to absorb, or gently removed with a cotton ball.

Step 4: Hydrate. The final step is hydrating your skin -a wonderfully rewarding step if the proper moisturizer is used. Keeping skin hydrated helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines while keeping skin fresh and healthy.

A good moisturizer should be free of harmful chemicals, have naturally effective moisturizers and be free of artificial fragrances which can irritate skin. Good moisturizing ingredients include Jojoba oil, Vitamin E, and Aloe. If your skin is not highly sensitive, alpha-hydroxy acids can help to work on fine lines.

Applying a moisturizer should be done quickly after toning to maximize the benefits. Gently rub the moisturizer into the skin on your face and neck, which is often overlooked.

Use an eye cream around the tender eye area, being careful not to tug at the skin under eyes. The best way to apply eye cream is to use your ring finger (the weakest finger) and gently tapping the cream around the eyes and even the eyelids.

Looking to take on that darn aging thing a bit more? Try a serum that offers intense hydration with hyaluronic acid, a peptide complex and DMAE, natural ingredients which help to plump fine lines and firm and tighten skin. An anti-aging serum can be applied around eyes, lips and neck – before other moisturizers.

And that’s it. It may look like a lot when it’s written out, but it does take only a few minutes. Start using this routine and your face will be grateful!

By: Kristin Miller

The quest for a beautifully radiant skin does not always have to be expensive. Having a radiant and youthful looking skin is just about any woman’s dream. The multitude of beauty products on the market which promise to deliver these results is concrete proof of this never-ending quest. However, the majority of these commercially prepared beauty products are expensive. This makes a lot of women (and men) wonder whether looking good really requires one to spend all those hard earned dollars.

But the truth is beautiful skin does not necessarily have to be achieved by using commercially prepared beauty products. Why not try looking in your refrigerator or kitchen cupboards for more affordable yet highly effective solutions?

You heard it right! Look inside your kitchen.

Fruits and vegetables undeniably do wonders for your skin. There is a whole range of fruits and vegetables available for every skin type and for every skin problem you might be dealing with. For our purposes, let us focus on the more problematic skin types – the oily skin, the dry skin and the combination skin.

Let us now explore this wonderful opportunity to achieve the flawless skin we have all been dreaming of!

Oily Skin No More

Excess oil on your face can be a source of embarrassment and can lead to other more serious skin conditions. Prevent this by considering these suggestions:

. Remove excess oil by mixing 2 tablespoons of wheat flour with the right amount of water and apply this on your face using an upward circular motion. Leave on for a few minutes before rinsing with cool water.
. Cucumbers can also offer great relief from oily skin! Grind half a cucumber and extract its juice for your face pack. Apply the juice onto your face and leave on for a few minutes. Rinse with water and pat dry. This can refresh and tighten your skin effectively!
. Aside from removing excess oil from your skin, fenugreek and red gram seeds can help remove blackheads. Simply soak 2 to 3 teaspoons of fenugreek or red gram seeds overnight in clean water, grind into a paste and apply onto face. Leave the face pack on for about a few minutes (until it dries up) before rinsing it with cold water. The excess paste can be stored in the refrigerator for future use. However, be sure that you use the fenugreek mixture within a week and the red gram mixture within two days after preparation to maintain its efficiency.

Moisturize Dry Skin

. Poppy seeds and peanuts both contain natural oils which can help nourish and moisturize dry skin. You can soak the poppy seeds overnight in water and grind it with milk to make a paste. Or if you want to use peanuts, you can grind 3 to 5 tablespoons of raw peanuts and add milk and ¼ teaspoon of honey to it. Apply your chosen mixture onto your face, leave it on until it dries and then rinse with water.

. Bananas can also provide great relief for dry skin! Simply mash half of a ripe banana and mix it with about a teaspoon of honey to make a paste. Apply onto face and rinse after a few minutes. The mixture is a great natural moisturizer and will help tighten your skin!

. Want to keep your skin supple? Try massaging fresh milk. Apply it using a gentle upward massaging motion. Leave on for a few minutes then rinse it off.

Combination Skin – Is It Twice the Problem?

A combination skin is usually dry in the cheek areas and oily in the T-zone (the forehead, the nose and the chin). However, achieving a healthier skin is not impossible. Consider these suggestions:

. One great solution can be achieved by mixing 3 to 4 tablespoons of Fuller’s Earth (Multani mitti) with 8 to 10 pieces of mint leaves. Freeze the mixture overnight and let it cool for about 10-15 minutes prior to use. Apply the mixture onto your face and leave on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with water.

. Ice it! A handful of lemon grass boiled in a liter of clean water and kept in the freezer can also be a great alternative. Rub a lemon grass ice cube onto your face after coming home from work of after an outing to cleanse away the dirt, which accumulates in your skin.

By: Michael Russell
